5Perfect replacements for the 9006 bulb
By Scott Ten Kley
I do a lot of night driving, especially in the winter. So, being able to see the road well is important. My 2010 Chevy Colorado uses the 9006 bulb, so when it was time to replace them, I began my search for the best 9006 replacement and stumbled upon the Philips 9012 HIR2. HID kits were considered, but with all of the problems people were having with ballast replacements and the fact they emit a huge amount of glare and are illegal in some areas made me shy away and I'm glad I did.

First, let me say that the 9012 HIR2 bulb fits right into the 9006 socket with a slight tab modification. You can learn more about it by searching the web, but the mod takes about 10 seconds per bulb. The bases of the two types are interchangeable, so it's truly plug and play. One thing to note about the 9012 HIR2's is that they don't have a blacked out tip like the 9006. So, before you order these, make sure your vehicle has a glare shield for the low beam lights. Otherwise, you'll just end up blinding people with the glare.

On paper, these bulbs look great compared to stock 9006 bulbs. 1850 lumens vs. 1000 stock, 3500k color vs. 3100 stock and these are rated at 1400 hours vs. anywhere between 700 and 1000 stock. These specifications are far superior to ANY stock or aftermarket 9006 bulb. And, when you buy the Philips 9012 HIR2 here on Amazon, they're far less expensive than at other sites, and less expensive than lesser bulbs like the Sylvania Silverstars.

So, how do they work in real world driving situations? Two words: they're amazing! My stock 9006 bulbs provided about 2-3 seconds of light ahead of my truck while the 9012's provide at least double that...critical time when you're trying to spot deer. The beam spread is also far superior, lighting up areas that were dark before, like ditches, fields and such. The cutoff of the HIR2's is also impressive. They completely fill the near field without blinding oncoming drivers. The y're so effective that I've found myself forgetting to turn my high beams on while driving in the country on on the highway at night.

In short, this has been one of the best modifications I've done to my vehicle so far. Forget about doing a cheap HID kit conversion, as these will fit the bill. The Philips 9012 HIR2's are a must buy for anyone considering them. You won't be disappointed!

5Installs easily, works great.
By AverageGuyShopper
I already installed one side with the Philips 9006 headlight that I bought from Kmart in the past 1-2 years(?) for my T. Highlander. This time, rather than trekking out to the store, I just had Amazon deliver it me (for cheaper too!).

At risk of making me look like an idiot, but for the benefit of someone else who is not super car-savvy:

Initially when I tried to change the bulb, the headlight wouldn't fit into the socket no matter what I did. Then I realized I was trying to change out the highbeam bulb... oops. When I replaced the correct lowbeam (regular headlight) bulb it fit just fine. There is a groove on the inside of the connector that insures that you can only replace a lowbeam with lowbeam (9006) and the same with highbeam (9005). So, even though I did this easily in the past, I guess I was having one of those moments. Only cost me an extra 10 minutes of bewilderment.

Also, never touch the bulb itself with your bare hands as oil residue left the halogen bulb will shorten the lifespan of the bulb.

5Phillips HIR2 9012 Headlights
By Jesse
These lights live up to their promise and the Phillips reputation.

The light cast from the headlights is whiter and brighter, allowing me to see further down the road more clearly. I highly recommend these bulbs to anyone with 9012 sockets from the factory, or someone looking to upgrade their 9006 lights.

If installing these bulbs, please make sure that your headlight assembly has a bulb shield covering the front tip of the bulb. This prevents oncoming drivers from looking directly at the filament. DO NOT install these bulbs if you do not have a bulb shield.

(9012 lights can be modified to fit into a 9006 socket, it involves a little trimming of the plastic tab with nail clippers or a file)
