5headlight wars
By bobert9
cannot tell you how much researching and wasted time i have spent debating for the perfect set of headlights to replace my stock bulbs. the sad fact is that bulbs are bulbs, any after market bulbs are going to be an improvement than the ones you have in now. if your someone looking to drop $50 to $100 for greater output gains there are many options out there but for me, functionality, reliability and at a great price was my overall goal. it came down to the battle of Silver Star, Philips and GE. i have tried them all with my top picks being Philips X-tremes and GE nighthawks, silver star are a great product but they are still over priced and do not last as long as i would expect from a company that says they produce the best replacement bulb. silver star ultra's are more a performance looking bulb with a tint of blue/purple look to them. i was overall happy with the X-trmes, offered a true bright white light with a more centered beam that increases a wider and longer visu al display a night. do not expect 80% brighter or any other gimmicks that persuade you towards one band over the other, if i had to give a percentage of gains, would say 30 to 40 percent brightness. for being the cheapest out of all three and for the gains i got, i was impressed. i would recommend these bulbs to anyone wanting a simple solution to enhance driving visibility without breaking the bank.

4brightest halogen bulbs i have used
By Ali S.
Pros:
* bright light output for halogens
* wider than average beam pattern
* excellent build quality (made in Germany)
* smaller size bulbs makes installation easier

Cons:
* shorter lifetime compared to regular bulbs (150hr)

first thing i do when buying new cars is changing their bulbs. cars, specially economy ones like civics and corollas, are equipped with long life low output lights. only bulbs i don't change are for my HID equipped luxury vehicle. as for halogens, I have tried many bulbs and i have learned 3 important lessons:

1. Do not buy those blue tinted bulbs that run on dangerously high voltage
2. performance bulbs die quickly
3. Philips x-treme are the best darn halogens out there

No matter which halogen bulbs you buy, if they claim more brightness (ie. sylvania silverstra ultra, osram nightbreaker, philips x-treme) they will not last you long. This because the filament burns at high er temperatures to improve brightness. Even still, the Philips x-tremes lasted significantly longer than the sylvania silverstar ultras. Philips x-treme lasted for about 1.5 years or roughly 150-200 hours compared to sylvania's 15 hours! They are also brighter than the sylvanias but not as white. also compared to other bulbs, philips x-treme powers are really well built with water resistant quartz glass and smaller than normal bulb size which makes them easier to install. Overall i recommend this bulb due to its higher than average light output and wider beam pattern. Only disadvantage is reduced bulb life time. Note that there are now newer Philips x-treme vision +100, which are slightly (10%) brighter.

4Noticeable improvement - worth the money
By Left Coast Gearhead
Recently replaced both headlight units on my DD Nissan (bought used, original lenses had started to deteriorate & yellow) but still wanted to improve the low beam output a bit more without melting or damaging the new lights (all plastic) or surrounding wiring.

Did a lot of research on the various replacement bulbs that are available. Unfortunately, much of what I found was overwritten, flowery hype on what are basically "tinted" stock bulbs or simply outright BS ("Xenon HID 9007 Hyper Purple" for example) and it came down to there only being 3 or 4 `real' choices that would provide a useful improvement in light output on the market.

In checking those, these Philips X-treme Power bulbs seem to have the best combination of increased light output coupled with better longevity, so I bought a pair. While I did not really notice a big improvement driving in built-up areas, there was a noticeable increase in light on dark or under lit roads, probably arou nd 25-30%, + the light itself was more focused and evenly spread compared to the stock bulbs. These are also fully DOT approved and did not seem to emit excess glare.

Overall, I would definitely recommend them as an inexpensive yet worthwhile upgrade. As a side note, the bulbs that I received were made in Germany, which was a nice change from all the Chinese crap that seems to dominate the market.
